Australia’s first union for game workers at Melbourne International Games Week
Monday 19 September 2022
Australia’s first ever union for game workers, Game Worker Australia (GWA), part of Professionals Australia, will have a strong presence at this year’s Melbourne International Games Week 1-9 October (MIGW)
, advocating for a stronger, fairer and more inclusive games industry.
GWA has organised a networking event, panel discussions and an information booth at MIGW to engage and inform game workers about their employment rights and outline what the union aims to achieve for workers in the industry.
Professionals Australia CEO Jill McCabe said that GWA’s attendance at MIGW provided a valuable opportunity for game workers to connect with the union and learn more about the positive role it can play in the industry.
''Game Workers Australia will be involved in several events throughout MIGW, engaging with game workers, discussing their working conditions and identifying improvements we can achieve together.
“Game workers can expect to learn more about the value of joining GWA and how their industrial interests and rights will be protected. They will also have the opportunity to meet our representatives and hear from industrial experts.”
Tim Colwill of Game Workers Australia said that game workers would have the opportunity to connect with GWA at several exciting events throughout MIGW.
“We’ve organised a special Game Workers Group Up
event at Torrens University, which is one of the major networking events in the Creative Victoria-curated Melbourne International Games Week calendar.
“Given our commitment to building a safe and inclusive environment for game workers in the industry, our event will be an alcohol-free, inclusive and accessible event.
“Workers can meet us throughout the week. In addition to our Group Up event, we’ll be delivering a presentation to GCAP at 12 pm on October 4; holding a presentation at High Score on October 1; and we will be at the Games Career Expo@PAX from October 7 to 9.
“I encourage every game worker, whether they are a member or not, to attend the Game Workers Group Up
event and join us throughout the week for career advice, support, and to learn more about how we can all work together to build a better, safer, more sustainable industry.”
